SEO: How to Choose a Keyword

If you are trying to use SEO or Search Engine Optimization in order to make sure that Google, Bing and Yahoo find and display your articles, you need to choose a few keyword phrases that sum up your topic. One of those phrases will become your primary keyword for your article.

First, your keyword should not be just one word. It should consist of two to five words. They should be the words that someone is likely to type into the search box if they were looking for an article on your topic.

 for example.

You can easily see what a poor decision that would be by typing that name into your own search box. When I typed in "india," for example, I came up with 929,452,579 different articles. What are the chances that you are going to be able to write one of the top 10 articles on that topic? Where would you even begin to write an article that covered everything there is to say about india? On the other hand, when I typed in "Picasso paintings at the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art," I only had about 500,000 articles that popped up in my search engine. If I was looking for a specific Picasso, the number would have dropped even more. The more specific your topic, the lower your competition becomes.

If you want to get very sophisticated, you can use Google's Adword Planner (adwords. google. com /KeywordPlanner). It will generate a list of potential keywords and let you know the competition. However, most people will not find that necessary.

Instead, simply make your own list of phrases that you think describe the topic of your article. Think of synonyms for your top phrases, too. Here are some examples:

wedding venues in Laguna Beach
where to get married in Laguna Beach
wedding locations in Laguna Beach
best places to get married in Laguna Beach
Tivoli Too wedding venue in Laguna Beach
Once you have your list of five or more keyword phrases, you will want to do a keyword search for each of them. Choose the keyword phrase that has the lowest competition as your primary keyword phrase ... as long as it accurately describes your article. However, you'll want to keep the rest of the keyword phrases on your list. You will use them, too.
